Maine Bike Rally
At the Maine Bike Rally, I ran into a fair number of people, some of whom I'd met previously, and others that I hadn't. It was nice to see some people (from away) that were involved with the 2004 East Coast Greenway Maine to Florida Bike Tour that I hadn't seen since my role as Tour Coordinator ended. I also got to ride a 6 foot+ homebuilt tall bike. The Rally parade was fun - an interesting collection of HPV's to be sure! I also got to ride and talk a bit with George Reynolds. Finally, the BCM annual meeting was pretty inspiring - some great people were there and many good cycle related goings-on were reported here in the Great State of Maine!
Atmosfair
Atmosphair was held July 29 and 30 in Owl's Head, Maine, At the Owl's Head Transportation Museum and featured HPV's and alternatively powered vehicles. Many diverse aspects of transporation were represented at the overall event, of which Atmosphair was just a small part. Bikes, cars, and planes from various time periods spanning back at least 100 years. There was an air show as well, which was quite remarkable. The spins, spirals and loops of the featured Aerobat were awe inspiring, especially when I considered that I get dizzy just doing a handspring! It was fun hanging out with Dave Atwood of Stillwater recumbents up in Old Town, ME, who spent many years in the Airforce and provided interesting commentary on what was happening. In any case, I spoke with the organizer of the Atmosfair portion of the event, and he indicated that the museum is committed to growing the Atmosfair portion of the event over the next few years.
Common Ground Fair - Sept 22-24, Unity Maine
The Common Ground County Fair is always a great time, and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine offers valet bicycle parking, with a test area for a variety of different HPV's. Many craftspeople, organizations, music, food, and other things related to sustainable living and community can be found there. Dave Atwood will be there giving talks, as will I, and I plan to also have at least a couple bikes/trikes available for test rides as well.
2006 New England Human Powered Vehicle Rally - Over the last two years, the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts has provided a great, cycle friendly, centrally located spot to hold the New England HPV event. For 2006 I'd like to continue to build on the momentum of the past two years events and hold the '06 NE HPV Rally in the same area.
